In a surprising turn of events, Bhavani MLA KC Karuppannan revealed on Friday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had demanded that their state president, K Annamalai, be declared as the Chief Ministerial candidate for Tamil Nadu in the 2026 elections. This demand reportedly led to the rupture of the alliance between the BJP and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Speaking at a public meeting organized to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister CN Annadurai in Guruvareddiyur near Anthiyur in Erode, MLA KC Karuppannan expressed his concerns about the BJP’s proposal. He pointed out that Annamalai, despite his political potential, is relatively young compared to AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami in terms of political experience. Moreover, Karuppannan highlighted Annamalai’s previous criticisms of prominent Tamil Nadu political figures, including CN Annadurai, MGR, and Jayalalitha, suggesting that such criticism could only be tolerated to a certain extent.

Karuppannan went on to reveal that the BJP sought an alliance with AIADMK for the upcoming parliamentary elections and insisted on nominating Annamalai as the Chief Ministerial candidate in the 2026 Assembly election. He questioned the feasibility of accepting such demands from a party with a relatively small presence in Tamil Nadu compared to AIADMK’s extensive cadre base, which boasts around 2.5 crore members in the state.

The revelation by Bhavani MLA KC Karuppannan sheds light on the internal dynamics and tensions within the BJP-AIADMK alliance. The demand to field Annamalai as the Chief Ministerial candidate has proven to be a pivotal point of contention, ultimately leading to the dissolution of the alliance. This development could have significant implications for the political landscape in Tamil Nadu as the state approaches the 2026 Assembly elections.
