Chennai, Oct 2:  In a significant move to improve public transportation in Chennai, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is gearing up to introduce Passenger Information Displays at 71 bus termini and 532 bus stops across the city. This exciting initiative is part of the Chennai Intelligent Transport System (CITS), a transformative project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

They will provide real-time information on bus locations, arrival times, and departure schedules, making it easier for travelers to plan their journeys efficiently. While the MTC has already launched the Chennai Bus App, which offers real-time bus tracking, these new displays cater to individuals who prefer not to rely on mobile apps.

The Chennai Bus App has already gained widespread popularity, with approximately 4.26 lakh people having downloaded it to streamline their daily commutes. However, recognizing the diverse needs of passengers, the MTC is taking this step to ensure that everyone can access vital transportation information conveniently.

The Chennai Intelligent Transport System (CITS) is a game-changer in urban mobility, with an estimated cost of Rs 136 crore. The project is set to be implemented soon, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Chennai Smart City Ltd. The CITS encompasses a range of features, including an automatic vehicle location system, passenger information displays, depot management, and more. These advancements will not only benefit passengers but also enhance the efficiency of MTC operations.

Here are some key highlights of the Chennai Intelligent Transport System (CITS):

Real-Time Information: The introduction of Passenger Information Displays will empower commuters with real-time updates on bus locations, allowing them to make informed decisions about their journeys.

Enhanced Accessibility: By providing information through displays at bus stops and termini, the MTC is ensuring that passengers without smartphones or those who prefer not to use mobile apps can still access critical transit information.

Popular Chennai Bus App: With over 4.26 lakh downloads, the Chennai Bus App has already proven its value in helping passengers navigate the city’s bus network efficiently.

Investment in Smart Mobility: The CITS project, funded by JICA, represents a significant investment in smart mobility solutions. It aligns with Chennai’s vision for a modern, efficient, and passenger-centric public transportation system.

Operational Efficiency: Beyond passenger benefits, the CITS project will enhance the overall operational efficiency of MTC, making fleet management, scheduling, and depot operations more streamlined and effective.
