In a bid to promote sports and provide world-class facilities to aspiring athletes in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M K Stalin unveiled a comprehensive plan to support and nurture talent at both grassroots and elite levels. Speaking at a felicitation event organized by the Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department for the medal winners from Tamil Nadu at the recent Asian Games, Chief Minister Stalin highlighted a series of initiatives aimed at encouraging sportspersons in the state.
Creation of Olympic Academies:
Stalin announced that the state government is set to establish Olympic academies in key cities, including Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, and Nilgiris. These academies will serve as specialized training centers to groom athletes for international competitions. This move is a testament to the government’s commitment to nurturing talent at the highest level of sports.
Mini Stadiums in Assembly Segments:
In a significant development, the government is also in the process of constructing mini stadiums in each assembly segment across the state. These mini stadiums will serve as local hubs for sports and recreational activities, enabling easier access to sporting facilities for people across Tamil Nadu.
Sporting Infrastructure Expansion:
The Tamil Nadu Champions Foundation, operating in public-private partnership (PPP) mode, has played a pivotal role in enhancing the state’s sports infrastructure. Through this initiative, the government has made considerable investments in upgrading facilities to support a wide range of sports activities. This will provide aspiring athletes with the necessary resources and infrastructure to hone their skills.
Support for Sportspersons:
The State government has demonstrated its unwavering support for athletes by facilitating 1,864 sportspersons who have represented Tamil Nadu in national and international events. These athletes received financial assistance amounting to Rs 52.82 crore. This assistance has been instrumental in enabling athletes to focus on their training and compete at the highest level.
Upcoming Khelo India Event:
Tamil Nadu will play host to the prestigious Khelo India sports event, highlighting the state’s growing prominence in the field of sports. The event will provide a platform for emerging talents to showcase their skills and compete at a national level.
Sports City in Chennai:
In another groundbreaking development, Chief Minister Stalin announced plans to establish a “sports city” in Chennai. This visionary project aims to create a world-class sports complex that will serve as a hub for various sports and host international events, further boosting Tamil Nadu’s standing in the sporting world.
