After a period of relative respite, Tamil Nadu witnessed another COVID-19 fatality, marking the second death reported within a span of two days. The state, which had experienced its last COVID-19 death five months ago, now sees its death toll climb to 38,083. The recent victim, a 36-year-old male hailing from Thiruvallur, succumbed to the virus on December 26, 2023. The individual had several comorbid conditions, including uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Admitted to Saveetha Medical College Hospital on December 22, 2023, the patient presented symptoms of fever, nausea, and breathing difficulty persisting for seven days. Despite receiving medical attention, the patient’s health deteriorated, leading to COVID-19 Pneumonia, multi-organ dysfunction, Acute Kidney injury, and Cytokine storm, ultimately resulting in his demise. This case underscores the severity of the virus, especially for individuals with pre-existing health conditions. On the broader front, Tamil Nadu reported 40 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, pushing the total active cases in the state to 172. A total of 526 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, yielding a test positivity rate of 5.4 percent. Chennai, the state capital, recorded 25 new cases, with a positivity rate of 15.7 percent, contributing to the city’s current tally of 95 active cases. The surge in cases serves as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by the virus, emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance and adherence to preventive measures. @@@@
