Heavy downpour: Schools, colleges closed in many districts

In response to a relentless downpour on Monday, several districts in Tamil Nadu have declared a one-day holiday for schools and colleges. Notable regions affected include Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thiruvarur, Nagai (including Kilvelur taluk), Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Chengalpattu, Karaikal, and Puducherry.The decision comes after the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai issued a yellow warning for coastal districts, including Chennai, predicting heavy rain until today. The cause is attributed to a cyclonic circulation and a prevailing trough over the sea.P Senthamarai Kannan, Director of the Area Cyclone Center at RMC, reassures that while January rainfall is not unusual for the state, the intense spells over coastal districts are expected to subside gradually from Tuesday. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea is predicted to shift, bringing anticipated monsoon spells over southern parts of Tamil Nadu in the upcoming week.Looking ahead, the RMC forecasts heavy rain over Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, and Kanyakumari on January 9 and 10. Some isolated areas in Tamil Nadu might experience light to moderate rain during the same period.The local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and citizens are urged to adhere to safety guidelines during adverse weather conditions.
