In a fiery session of the Lok Sabha, DMK leader T R Baalu accused the BJP-led Centre of neglecting Tamil Nadu’s developmental needs and turning a blind eye to the state’s requests for assistance in the face of natural disasters. Speaking during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address, Baalu expressed his concerns regarding the treatment meted out to Tamil Nadu by the central government. Baalu, while addressing the Parliament, criticised what he termed as “step-motherly treatment” towards Tamil Nadu, alleging that the Centre has been indifferent to the state’s demands for various developmental projects and aid to cope with the aftermath of natural calamities. He emphasized the importance of a more collaborative approach between the central government and Tamil Nadu to address the pressing issues facing the state. The DMK leader also took aim at governors in opposition-ruled states, accusing them of undermining elected governments and displaying little regard for constitutional norms. Baalu pointed out instances where governors seemingly disregarded their constitutional responsibilities, noting that some governors appeared to consider themselves above the constitutional framework. Highlighting the ongoing issues faced by Tamil Nadu, Baalu urged for a higher budgetary allocation for the state and called for the inclusion of petroleum products under the Goods and Services Tax (GST). He emphasized that these measures were crucial for the state’s economic growth and stability. Baalu reiterated the longstanding demands of the DMK, including exemption from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), increased allocation for Tamil Nadu, flood relief, the establishment of an AIIMS at Madurai, and approval for the second phase of the metro rail project in Chennai.
