Chennai, Feb 8: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is gearing up to revolutionize public transportation in the city with the introduction of its first driverless train for the ongoing phase II project. Scheduled to commence production at Sri City on February 8, this milestone marks a significant leap forward in Chennai’s metro infrastructure.
A team from Chennai will oversee the initiation of the production process, signaling the beginning of a new era in metro operations. Anticipation runs high as the driverless train is slated to arrive in the city by August, heralding a paradigm shift in the way commuters experience urban transit.
Unlike the manual train operations of the Metro Rail phase I project, the phase II project will introduce cutting-edge technology with three-coach driverless trains spanning a network of 116 kilometers. Commuters can expect to experience the convenience and efficiency of automated train operations when the Poonamallee-Porur stretch opens to the public in December 2025.
Maintaining the iconic blue color scheme of CMRL, these state-of-the-art trains will boast a host of new amenities designed to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. Mobile charging points will be available onboard, ensuring travelers can stay connected throughout their journey. Additionally, digital dynamic route maps will provide real-time information, aiding commuters in navigating the metro network seamlessly.
In a nod to inclusivity and safety, one coach of the driverless trains will be designated as women-only, featuring distinctive pink handrails. Advanced safety features have also been incorporated into the design, including a comprehensive camera system for enhanced security, a fire detection system, derailment detection system, and an obstacle detection system.
