Annamalai, the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has called upon the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government to implement stringent measures against individuals involved in drug trafficking. Citing the link between a DMK NRI wing functionary and Tamil film producer AR Jaffer Sadiq with an international drugs trafficking network, Annamalai expressed serious concern over the government’s perceived inaction in addressing the issue.

Highlighting the BJP’s repeated appeals to the Stalin-led government to crack down on drug peddlers, Annamalai underscored the detrimental impact of drug influence on students in schools and colleges. Despite these warnings, Annamalai lamented the lack of decisive action by the government.

The revelation of the alleged involvement of a prominent DMK figure in drug smuggling operations from Chennai has intensified suspicions and raised questions about the government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking, Annamalai asserted. Emphasising the gravity of the situation and characterizing drug trafficking as a threat to national security, Annamalai urged the Tamil Nadu government to swiftly identify and prosecute all individuals implicated in drug-related crimes.

Annamalai also cast doubt on the connections between the accused AR Jaffer Sadiq and several political figures, including Chief Minister MK Stalin, Ministers Udhayanidhi and Sekarbabu, VCK president Thirumavalavan, and various actors in the Tamil film industry.

Earlier in February, a joint operation conducted by the federal anti-narcotics agency and the special cell of the Delhi Police led to the dismantling of an international drugs trafficking network. The arrest of three individuals from Tamil Nadu and the seizure of 50 kg of narcotics-making chemicals in West Delhi underscored the extent of the illicit trade.

According to NCB Deputy Director General Gyaneshwar Singh, the mastermind behind the drug nexus has been identified as Tamil film producer AR Jaffer Sadiq, prompting intensified efforts to apprehend him. In response to these developments, the DMK swiftly dismissed AR Jaffer Sadiq from his primary membership and other party positions, as announced by General Secretary Duraimurugan.

The unfolding events underscore the urgency of addressing drug trafficking and the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and government authorities to combat this scourge plaguing society.
