Erode MP hospitalised after alleged suicide attempt


In a shocking turn of events, A Ganesamoorthy, the Member of Parliament representing Erode and a prominent figure in the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), was hospitalized after an alleged suicide attempt on Sunday. The 77-year-old MP reportedly consumed a pesticide tablet and was found unconscious at his residence in Periyar Nagar by his son, G Kabilan.

Ganesamoorthy, who was elected on a DMK ticket in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Erode and later transferred to another private hospital in Coimbatore via ambulance. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and has been placed on a ventilator, according to police sources.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the political circles of Tamil Nadu, with leaders from various parties expressing concern and visiting the hospital to enquire about Ganesamoorthy’s health. Minister for Urban Development and Housing Excise and Prohibition S Muthusamy, along with other MDMK leaders, were among those who visited the hospital to check on the MP’s condition.

Ganesamoorthy, a three-time MP, has been a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu politics, having also served as an MLA from the Modakurichi assembly constituency. However, the motive behind his alleged suicide attempt remains unclear, and a police inquiry is currently underway to ascertain whether it was due to political reasons or other factors.
