O Panneerselvam, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, once fought a bitter battle to assert his leadership within the AIADMK, only to ultimately lose the contest. Now, as the nomination deadline for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu draws near, he finds himself embroiled in a different kind of struggle ā one to prove his identity as the “real OPS.”
With the state gearing up for elections on April 19, Ramanathapuram has become the epicenter of a peculiar electoral phenomenon: there are five candidates named O Panneerselvam vying for a seat in the Lok Sabha. Among them is the ex-Chief Minister himself, who lost the leadership of the AIADMK to E Palaniswami in a previous power struggle.
Despite his setbacks within the party, Panneerselvam remains a formidable figure in Tamil Nadu politics. Contesting as an Independent candidate from Ramanathapuram, he is widely perceived to be backed by the BJP-led NDA alliance, signaling a strategic alliance between the two political entities.
However, what adds intrigue to the electoral landscape is the presence of four other candidates bearing the name O Panneerselvam, all running as Independents. Hailing from different regions such as Usilampatii, Kattur, and Madurai, these candidates represent a curious case of political mimicry.
While each of the four independent candidates shares the name O Panneerselvam, one of them is said to bear a striking resemblance to the original OPS in more ways than one.Ā
As the electoral battle heats up, all eyes are on Ramanathapuram to witness the outcome of this unusual showdown.
