Lord Kallazhagar descends into Vaigai river amidst grand festivities


The devout city of Madurai was ablaze with anticipation and fervor as Lord Kallazhagar commenced his sacred journey from the majestic Alagar hills, culminating in his divine descent into the tranquil waters of the Vaigai river in Tallakulam on Tuesday. The occasion marked the auspicious ‘Ethir sevai’ festival, celebrated with great zeal and reverence by scores of devotees who eagerly awaited the arrival of their beloved deity.

With the break of dawn, Lord Kallazhagar made his majestic entry into the Vaigai river at 6:02 am, accompanied by the jubilant cheers and prayers of the faithful. Many devotees, adorning themselves in the guise of Lord Alagar, joined the procession, joyously spraying water to beat the heat and partake in the sacred festivities.

According to time-honored tradition, the revered deity commenced his journey from the Alagar temple, adorned in resplendent golden palanquin, symbolizing the grandeur and sanctity of the occasion. The procession wound its way through the hallowed streets of Kallandhiri, Appanthirupathi, and Kadachanendhal, evoking a sense of spiritual transcendence and reverence among the throngs of devotees.

In a testament to the meticulous planning and coordination, as many as 4,000 police personnel were deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of the proceedings, underscoring the importance of maintaining order and security during such sacred events. The installation of 720 CCTV cameras and four drone cameras further enhanced surveillance and monitoring efforts, providing comprehensive coverage of the festivities.

Devotees were treated to a spectacle of divine grace and devotion, with special facilities including footsteps along the North and South riverbanks of Vaigai facilitating easy access for worshippers. Madurai City Commissioner of Police, J. Loganathan, implemented strategic crowd management measures, diverting a large number of devotees through a specially constructed gangway to maintain order and safety.

Amidst the spiritual fervor, the vigilant efforts of law enforcement agencies were evident, with 60 crime prevention teams deployed to ensure a peaceful and secure environment. A total of 82 troublemakers and 18 crime offenders were apprehended, with 26 weapons including knives and blades seized, underscoring the commitment to maintaining law and order.
