In a surprising discovery at Chennai airport, gold bars worth a staggering 75 lakh were found dumped inside a restroom on Thursday night. Central revenue intelligence officials swiftly took possession of the 1.2kg consignment after vigilant conservancy workers cleaning washrooms spotted the parcel inside a garbage bin.
Customs officials speculated that the suspect responsible for dumping the gold may have done so upon realizing that customs checks had been intensified within the airport premises. This brazen attempt to evade detection highlights the challenges faced by authorities in combating smuggling activities.
The gold seizure comes on the heels of two successive cocaine hauls at the airport, collectively worth 45 crore, further underscoring the prevalence of illicit activities within the aviation hub. @@@

The Chennai police sniffer dog squad operates from Kilpauk and St Thomas Mount under the supervision of sub-inspectors of police. The squad comprises 21 sniffer dogs (excluding the three puppies), each with specialised training.
