Southern Railway (SR) is embarking on a significant journey to revitalize Egmore Railway Station, a vital hub connecting commuters across the region. With a tender awarded in October 2022, the ambitious redevelopment project is well underway, promising to transform the station into a modern and efficient transportation hub. The endeavor comes with an estimated cost of Rs 734.91 crore and aims to enhance the overall passenger experience while addressing longstanding infrastructure challenges.
As part of the ongoing restoration efforts, Southern Railway sources have announced the imminent opening of a temporary ticket counter at Egmore station’s exit side on EVK Sampath Road. This temporary facility will provide essential ticketing services to passengers until the completion of the redevelopment project, slated for 2025.
Egmore Railway Station, one of the city’s four main terminuses, witnesses a significant influx of commuters, especially during peak hours. Despite the presence of two unreserved and three reserved counters, long queues are a common sight, underscoring the need for improved amenities and infrastructure.
In response to the restoration work, passengers have voiced their concerns and advocated for enhanced facilities. Murugan, a disabled individual, has emphasized the importance of seating and rest facilities near the ticket counters, particularly for passengers with mobility challenges. Additionally, many elderly and illiterate passengers continue to rely on traditional ticket counters, highlighting the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in railway services.
Addressing these concerns, passengers stress the need for sufficient ticket counters to accommodate diverse needs and preferences. While digital alternatives like the UTS app and ATVM machines offer convenience, they may not be accessible to all passengers, underscoring the importance of maintaining traditional ticketing options.
The redevelopment of Egmore Railway Station represents a significant step towards modernizing railway infrastructure and improving passenger satisfaction.
