TN govt clarifies on E-Pass requirement

The Tamil Nadu government has issued a clarification regarding the visitation of tourists and businesspersons to popular tourist destinations like Kodaikanal and Ooty. Contrary to previous reports, the government clarified that there are no restrictions on individuals visiting these regions, but an e-pass is mandatory for vehicles entering the area.
According to a release issued by the government, tourists and business visitors can freely explore tourist spots in Kodaikanal and Ooty. However, the vehicles they travel in must register for an e-pass before entering the region. The release emphasized that tourists and business visitors can obtain an e-pass starting from 6 am on May 6, 2024, by providing relevant information on the epass.tnega.org website.
The application process for e-passes is simple and accessible. Foreign travelers can apply online using their email addresses, while domestic passengers can apply using their phone numbers. Once the application is submitted, e-passes will be immediately available for use. This streamlined process aims to facilitate the movement of vehicles and ensure ease of travel for tourists.
The government assured that the implementation of the e-pass system would not inconvenience tourists. In fact, it is expected to streamline vehicle movement and enhance the overall visitor experience. District Collectors will oversee the implementation of this procedure from May 7 to June 30, 2024, to ensure its smooth execution.
This clarification comes in response to a previous directive from the Madras High Court, which ordered tourists visiting Ooty and Kodaikanal to submit their details in advance through a designated website and apply for an e-pass. The objective behind this order was to manage the influx of tourists during the peak summer season and ensure effective crowd control measures.
With the e-pass requirement in place, tourists can enjoy their visits to Kodaikanal and Ooty with the assurance of a streamlined process for entry and exit.
