In the rapidly developing neighborhood of Singaperumal Koil, near Chennai, residents and commuters are increasingly frustrated by the prolonged construction of a massive flyover. Despite being under construction for an astonishing 16 years, the project remains incomplete, highlighting significant infrastructural inadequacies in the area.
The flyover, intended to ease the chronic traffic congestion at the manned railway crossing between Guduvanchery and Singaperumal Koil stations, has become a symbol of bureaucratic delays and inefficiency. Daily, countless commuters find themselves stuck for hours as the railway crossing gates remain closed, causing substantial traffic pile-ups on the national highway.
The origin of this troubled project dates back to 2007, when the then-ruling DMK party proposed the construction of the flyover to connect the NH and the Sriperumbudur-Oragadam Road in Thirukachur. An initial budget of Rs 52 crores was allocated. However, progress stalled after 2011, leaving the project in limbo.
A decade later, in 2021, the Tamil Nadu government revived the project, increasing the budget to Rs 138.27 crores in hopes of finally bringing it to completion. Despite this renewed effort, the construction has once again slowed, leaving the flyover unfinished and the community’s frustration mounting.
Residents are now urging the Highways Department to at least inaugurate the overpass towards Tambaram, where 80% of the work has reportedly been completed. Such a move would provide significant relief to the beleaguered commuters who have borne the brunt of the delays for years.
The incomplete flyover at Singaperumal Koil is a stark reminder of the challenges facing infrastructure development in rapidly urbanizing regions. For the thousands of people affected daily, the completion of this project cannot come soon enough.
