‘Give freedom to police’

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin to grant the police department full autonomy to effectively combat anti-social elements. Palaniswami claims that during the previous AIADMK regime, the police were allowed to operate independently, maintaining law and order across the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Palaniswami alleged that under the current DMK administration, the police force has been significantly weakened and is now acting as a tool for the ruling party. “The police have lost their address and have become the ruling party’s puppets. They remain mute spectators to anti-social elements’ behaviour. This is shameful,” he said.
The former chief minister highlighted a worrying rise in criminal activities, including murders, crimes against women, hooch deaths, a car bomb blast in Coimbatore, robberies, and the burgeoning drug culture. Palaniswami argued that these incidents are clear indicators of a deteriorating law and order situation under the DMK government.
Palaniswami’s comments underscore the political tension between the AIADMK and DMK, with both parties frequently trading accusations over governance and public safety. He asserted that under AIADMK rule, the police were empowered to perform their duties without political interference, resulting in better law enforcement and public safety.
“The current state of affairs is concerning. The rise in crime rates shows that the police are unable to act effectively. The government must allow them to work independently to restore law and order,” Palaniswami insisted.
This call to action comes as Tamil Nadu faces increased scrutiny over its handling of public safety and crime prevention. The AIADMK leader’s remarks reflect a broader demand for stronger governance and accountability from the ruling party to ensure the safety and security of the state’s residents.
