Three cheers for DMK in Chennai

The preliminary figures from the vote-counting process in the Lok Sabha elections indicate a strong performance by the DMK in Chennai’s key constituencies:

Chennai South: Thamizhachi Thangapandian is leading and confident of securing a third term. Despite this, the BJP is hoping to leverage the sizeable Brahmin and upwardly-mobile population to boost their candidate, Tamilisai Soundararajan. Additionally, Tamil Selvi from the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) is another notable contender.

Chennai Central: Dayanidhi Maran is leading in this DMK stronghold.

Chennai North: Kalanidhi Veeraswamy, son of former minister Arcot N. Veeraswami, is also leading and is hopeful for another term, having secured a 61.85% vote share in the 2019 elections. The main issues in this constituency include industrial pollution and floods, affecting the largely working-class population across assembly segments such as Thiruvottiyur, Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar, Perambur, Kolathur, Thiru-Vi-Ka-Nagar, and Royapuram.
