Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru announced on Saturday that the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will see an increase in the number of wards. This decision aims to better serve the city’s growing population, which currently stands at 8.9 million. Minister Nehru made this announcement on the third day of the Tamil Nadu Assembly session.

Chennai, which presently has 200 wards, is facing a situation where each ward, on average, serves over 40,000 residents. This high ratio has prompted the government to consider increasing the number of wards to ensure more effective governance and representation for the people of Chennai.

City Mayor R. Priya had earlier hinted at these expansion plans, suggesting the inclusion of additional areas such as Tambaram into the corporation’s jurisdiction. Minister Nehru confirmed that work is already underway to implement these changes, which will result in more representatives for Chennai residents.

The expansion of wards is expected to improve civic administration and ensure that municipal services are more accessible to all residents. This move reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of Chennai’s rapidly growing population and enhancing the overall quality of urban governance.

As the plans for increasing the number of wards progress, residents can anticipate a more responsive and efficient municipal administration. The government’s efforts aim to create a more balanced distribution of resources and representation, ultimately leading to improved living conditions for the people of Chennai.
