Port Louis, July 17: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday for a two-day visit aimed at strengthening the special bilateral ties between India and Mauritius. This visit marks one of Jaishankar’s first engagements since being re-appointed in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term.

Jaishankar was warmly received at the airport by Mauritius’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade, Maneesh Gobin. Expressing his appreciation, Jaishankar tweeted, “Namaste Mauritius! Thank Foreign Minister @ManeeshGobin for the warm welcome. Look forward to productive engagements to take forward this special relationship.”

In response, Gobin highlighted the enduring partnership between the two nations, tweeting, “Delighted to welcome @DrSJaishankar to Mauritius. His visit highlights the strong and enduring partnership between our nations. Together, we continue to strengthen our ties and explore new avenues of cooperation.”

During his visit, Jaishankar will meet with Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and hold bilateral discussions with other senior ministers. The Ministry of External Affairs stated, “The visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to comprehensively take stock of various facets of the bilateral relationship.” Jaishankar will also engage with other prominent Mauritian leaders to further deepen the multi-dimensional bilateral relationship and strengthen people-to-people ties.

This visit underscores the importance of the India-Mauritius relationship and reflects India’s ā€˜Neighbourhood First Policy,’ Vision SAGAR, and commitment to the Global South. It follows the recent visit of Prime Minister Jugnauth to India for the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet and Council of Ministers. Jaishankar had previously visited Mauritius in February 2021.

India and Mauritius share a close, long-standing relationship, with historical, demographic, and cultural ties. Approximately 70 percent of Mauritius’ population is of Indian origin. India has been a key responder in times of crisis for Mauritius, providing significant aid during the Covid-19 pandemic and the Wakashio oil spill.

Jaishankar’s visit reaffirms the continued commitment of both countries to further strengthen their relationship and explore new areas of cooperation.
