The Ministry of External Affairs stated, “The visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to comprehensively take stock of various facets of the bilateral relationship.” Jaishankar will also engage with other prominent Mauritian leaders to further deepen the multi-dimensional bilateral relationship and strengthen people-to-people ties.
This visit underscores the importance of the India-Mauritius relationship and reflects India’s âNeighbourhood First Policy,â Vision SAGAR, and commitment to the Global South. It follows the recent visit of Prime Minister Jugnauth to India for the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet and Council of Ministers. Jaishankar had previously visited Mauritius in February 2021.
India and Mauritius share a close, long-standing relationship, with historical, demographic, and cultural ties. Approximately 70 percent of Mauritius’ population is of Indian origin. India has been a key responder in times of crisis for Mauritius, providing significant aid during the Covid-19 pandemic and the Wakashio oil spill.
Jaishankar’s visit reaffirms the continued commitment of both countries to further strengthen their relationship and explore new areas of cooperation.
