The Chennai City Police have apprehended M Anjalai, a former functionary of the Tamil Nadu BJP’s Mahila Morcha and partner of the late notorious criminal Arcot V Suresh. Anjalai was announced as a wanted suspect in the murder case of State BSP president K Armstrong. While police sources have confirmed her detention, an official announcement is still pending.Anjalai, classified as a ‘B’ category history-sheeter, emerged as a person of interest following the arrests of three other individuals: S Malarkodi, an advocate and AIADMK functionary; K Hariharan, a 27-year-old member of the Tamil Manila Congress; and K Sathish, whose father is affiliated with the DMK. These arrests led investigators to Anjalai, shedding light on her potential involvement in the case.
The brutal murder of BSP leader K Armstrong occurred on July 5 on Venugopal Swami Koil Street in Perambur. A gang ambushed Armstrong, leading to a swift response from the city police, who arrested eight individuals within three hours. Among those apprehended was Arcot Sureshās younger brother. The police initially posited that Armstrong’s murder was an act of retaliation for the killing of Suresh in August of the previous year. Subsequent investigations resulted in three additional arrests, including D Selvaraj, a BJP functionary.
The case took a dramatic turn on Sunday when K Thiruvengadam, one of the suspects, was shot dead in a police encounter near Madhavaram. Thiruvengadam allegedly opened fire on the police when they attempted to apprehend him after he had escaped custody while officers sought to recover the weapons used in Armstrong’s murder.
