The Tamil Nadu government has announced a significant increase in seat capacity for Arts and Science colleges across the state, boosting the number of available seats by 20%. This adjustment includes a 15% increase in government-aided colleges and a 10% increase in self-financing institutions, as part of an effort to expand higher education access.To support this growth, the state’s Higher Education Department is conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the infrastructure needs, focusing on laboratories and essential amenities to ensure that the expanded intake is well accommodated. A senior official confirmed that the government has allocated Rs 100 crore for upgrading infrastructure in over 30 government colleges, with the Public Works Department overseeing these enhancements.
Colleges experiencing an increase in enrollments are required to report to their affiliated universities to obtain the necessary permissions for admissions. This procedural step ensures that the institutions can effectively manage the additional students while maintaining academic standards.
The government has also mandated that the increase in admissions will be subject to an annual review. Colleges must implement measures to prevent dropouts among the additional intake, ensuring that the expansion in seat capacity translates into successful graduation rates.
Self-financing colleges, while benefitting from the increased enrollments, are required to adhere to existing norms and regulations. Despite the rise in student numbers, these institutions are not permitted to request additional teaching staff, emphasizing the need for efficient resource management within the existing framework.
