London, Aug 21: Leicester City marked their return to the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, showing glimpses of their former glory. Manager Steve Cooper expressed satisfaction with the result but emphasised the need for victories to meet the expectations of the club’s dedicated supporters.
Tottenham, who controlled much of the first half, took the lead with a well-placed header from Pedro Porro in the 29th minute. Leicester, however, demonstrated resilience and determination in the second half. Jamie Vardy, the 37-year-old striker and club legend, brought the Foxes level in the 57th minute with a superb header.
Leicester’s return to the top flight follows a challenging season in the Championship, ending their nine-year stay in the Premier League. Cooper acknowledged the pressures and nerves surrounding the team but was encouraged by their performance against a strong Tottenham side.
“There’s a lot going on behind the team which will help, and with all of those things going on, there were bound to be some nerves and anxiety,” Cooper said post-match. “We had some really good moments against them in the second half. We became a really difficult opponent. It was a fairly positive start, but we want to be winning games.”
Reflecting on Leicester’s storied history, including their remarkable 2015/16 Premier League title, Cooper highlighted the club’s need to re-establish itself in the top tier. “This is a Premier League football club, but we’ve got to become a Premier League team again – that’s the aim,” he added.
