Tirupur police have arrested six individuals, including three police officers, in connection with a kidnapping and extortion case involving a prostitution racketeer. The incident unfolded on Thursday when the victim managed to escape from his captors and seek assistance from law enforcement.
The case began when a 26-year-old woman from Kovilvazhi area filed a complaint with Nallur police, reporting that her husband had been kidnapped by a six-member gang. The gang included individuals in police uniform, prompting a serious investigation.
According to police reports, the victim was identified as a man involved in online prostitution activities. The gang, allegedly composed of both active police officers and their accomplices, had abducted the man in a car. They then held him in illegal custody at a remote location, where they assaulted him and demanded a ransom of Rs 2 lakh for his release.
Arrested Individuals:
The arrested individuals include:
Somasundaram (31) and Gopalraj (33), both serving in the Tirupur Armed Reserve (AR).
Lakshmanan (32), a police officer stationed in Sholurmattam, Devala.
Jayaram (20), Harish (25), and Arun Kumar (24), who are not affiliated with law enforcement but are suspected accomplices.
The police have confirmed that Somasundaram, Gopalraj, and Lakshmanan have been working together in the police force since 2011. They allegedly conspired with Jayaram, Harish, and Arun Kumar to execute the kidnapping and extortion scheme, targeting individuals involved in online prostitution networks.
Police Action and Investigation:
The victim’s escape from the gang’s custody and subsequent rescue by police led to the swift arrest of the suspects. The investigation revealed that the group had planned to extort money from those connected to online prostitution.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the case to determine if the arrested police officers have been involved in other similar crimes. The involvement of police officers in such a crime is a significant concern, prompting a thorough review of their activities and potential connections to other illegal operations.
The case highlights serious issues of misconduct within law enforcement and raises questions about the integrity of police personnel. As investigations proceed, the Tirupur police aim to uncover the full extent of the gang’s criminal activities and ensure accountability for those involved.
The case is being closely monitored as it unfolds, with additional measures expected to address any broader implications for police conduct and criminal activities.
