TN pushes for Cauvery water release from Karnataka

On Thursday, officials from Tamil Nadu’s Water Resources Department (WRD), led by Additional Chief Secretary K. Manivasan, urged the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to ensure Karnataka releases 36.7 TMC of water to Tamil Nadu for September. This demand came in response to Karnataka’s claim of having already released 90 TMC of water. Tamil Nadu clarified that the surplus water discharged due to heavy rains in Karnataka’s catchment areas should not be considered part of the Supreme Court-mandated allocation from 2018. The CWMA is expected to make a decision in its next meeting.
