With the Northeast monsoon expected to hit Tamil Nadu in early October, the state government has intensified preparations to address potential flooding and disaster situations. High-level meetings are being conducted at both state and district levels to ensure effective monsoon preparedness.The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has mobilized volunteers to assist in flood-prone areas, while Resident Welfare Associations will soon participate in awareness programs to help local communities stay informed and prepared. Regular zonal-level meetings will be held to monitor the situation and coordinate efforts across the city.
A study conducted by the GCC following last year’s Cyclone Michaung revealed that inadequate stormwater drainage systems and the absence of floodplain laws were major contributors to the flooding that occurred. This year, corrective measures are being put in place to prevent similar issues.
State Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam recently reviewed the state’s monsoon preparedness with officials from the revenue, waterworks, and disaster management departments. He emphasized the urgency of completing ongoing infrastructure work and ensuring the deployment of rescue equipment in vulnerable areas. Separate meetings with officials from Chennai, Tambaram, Avadi, and nearby districts focused on flood mitigation strategies to safeguard these regions from potential monsoon impacts.
