India achieved a historic milestone at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, with both the men’s and women’s teams clinching gold medals. The men’s team defeated Slovenia, while the women’s team overcame Azerbaijan, marking India’s first-ever double gold victory at the Chess Olympiad.Grandmaster Praggnanandhaa celebrated this monumental achievement, stating, “India’s gold win at the Chess Olympiad is a historic triumph.”
The Indian teams received widespread congratulations from prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Following their victory, team captain Srinath, along with players Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali, arrived at Chennai airport the night before, while player Gukesh arrived in the morning. They were greeted warmly by officials from the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority.
During a press conference, Captain Srinath expressed his thoughts: “While we previously had to share a medal with Russia under less favorable conditions, this time both our men’s and women’s teams emerged victorious with higher points. This win solidifies our standing as a dominant force in the chess world.”
