The Tamil Nadu government is under intense scrutiny following the tragic deaths of five spectators and the hospitalization of over 200 during an Indian Air Force (IAF) air show held at Marina Beach on Sunday. The event, organized to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the IAF, turned chaotic as thousands of attendees were left struggling with overcrowding, traffic jams, and a lack of basic amenities amid sweltering heat.The situation took a grim turn as many spectators fainted from heat exhaustion and dehydration, prompting emergency services to rush them to nearby hospitals. The chaotic scenes unfolded as the crowd swelled to unmanageable levels, with traffic gridlocks exacerbating the situation.
As criticism mounted from opposition parties and calls for accountability grew louder, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian defended the state governmentâs preparations. Responding to accusations of poor planning, Subramanian asserted that the state had made every effort to meet and exceed the IAFâs requirements for the event.
âThe state government formed two medical teams with doctors and nurses for emergency response. The Army also sent medical teams, and 40 ambulances were on-site. We had 100 beds and 65 doctors ready at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for any emergency,â Subramanian explained in a statement.
The health minister added that the state had gone above and beyond to ensure public safety, emphasizing that medical teams were stationed at multiple points to handle emergencies, and hospitals were on high alert. Despite these assurances, the scale of the event and the sheer size of the crowd posed challenges.
