The recent air show event in Chennai attracted massive crowds but also sparked criticism over the lack of adequate public safety and facilities. Leaders from the AIADMK and BJP strongly condemned the government’s poor handling of the situation, blaming the authorities for failing to manage the large gathering effectively.

Former minister Jayakumar expressed his displeasure, stating, “While people were suffering under the scorching sun and on the sandy shores, both the central and state governments, along with their families, enjoyed the comforts of shaded enclosures. This clearly shows the elitism and corporate-driven governance that has abandoned the common man.” He emphasized that the government’s attitude showcased the growing disconnect between the administration and the public.

With the city grappling under the weight of the crowds, transportation was thrown into disarray. People were seen hanging from trains, packed into buses, and struggling in gridlocked streets. Jayakumar slammed the government’s lack of foresight, highlighting the absence of essential provisions such as drinking water, food, and temporary restrooms for the public.

BJP Vice President Narayanan Thirupathi also voiced his concerns, stating, “While it was heartening to see the public turn out enthusiastically for the event, the government failed to capture and respect the people’s energy and excitement. The entire administration came to a standstill.” He lamented the chaos at train stations, bus stops, and on city roads, where the overflowing crowds caught the police unprepared, calling it a significant failure in intelligence and planning.
Narayanan Thirupathi noted the disconnect between the administration and public safety, calling it “a complete shame” that police were left helpless and confrontations between them and the public ensued. He added that the lack of coordination within the city’s governance was an embarrassing failure, one that left Chennai’s residents stuck in unbearable traffic and crowd congestion.
The opposition parties have urged the government to take responsibility for the mismanagement and to ensure that better planning is in place for future events to prevent such discomfort and inconvenience to the public.
