As the northeast monsoon lashed the city, south Chennai was severely affected once again on Tuesday, with several areas inundated. Heavy rainfall resulted in extensive flooding, particularly in parts of Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), which remained largely cut off from the rest of the city by the evening, despite a slight reduction in rainfall.
Areas such as Valasaravakkam and Virugambakkam, which are usually prone to flooding, saw lesser waterlogging this time. However, other regions, particularly in the far south, like Kannagi Nagar in Thoraipakkam and Velachery, experienced significant flooding. Volunteers working with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) reported that relief centres in Thoraipakkam were not operational due to severe waterlogging.
On OMR, several stretches, including Sholinganallur and Kandanchavadi, faced traffic congestion as motorists had to navigate waterlogged roads. Rajiv Gandhi Salai was also heavily impacted, with GCC officials attributing the flooding to clogged stormwater drains filled with plastic waste and garbage.
In AGS Colony, Velachery, water levels rose up to 2-3 feet, but the situation began improving after motor pumps were deployed to drain the water. A GCC official stated that the Water Resources Department had been informed about the need for precautionary measures, and they would assess the situation based on the forecast for further rain.
Chennai South MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian reassured residents that the city is prepared to face the heavy rains. She announced that medical camps would be held in affected areas and milk packets distributed to all residents in need. She also urged residents to reach out to her for assistance, providing her contact number (9344833508) and email ([email protected]) for grievances.
As Chennai braces for more rain, officials are continuing their efforts to manage waterlogging and provide relief to the affected areas.
