The Tamil Nadu Health Department has imposed a 10-day suspension on a private hospital in Chennai following a controversial incident involving YouTuber Irfan. In a widely criticized vlog, Irfan, from the popular YouTube channel Irfansview, was seen cutting the umbilical cord of a newborn during childbirth at the hospital. The video, which sparked outrage within the medical community, has since been removed from Irfan’s channel. In addition to the temporary suspension of its operations, the hospital has been fined Rs 50,000 by health authorities. The Director of Medical Health and Rural Services has also written to the Tamil Nadu Medical Council, urging them to investigate the matter and take necessary action against the YouTuber.
The incident raised concerns over the ethical standards followed during medical procedures, with many in the medical fraternity condemning the hospital for allowing an unqualified individual to participate in a sensitive medical procedure. Following the backlash, Irfan took down the controversial video from his channel on Monday.
The Tamil Nadu Medical Council is expected to review the case in the coming days to determine further actions against those involved in the incident. The suspension serves as a warning to other medical institutions about adhering to ethical practices and ensuring patient safety in all circumstances.
