Chennai is buzzing with excitement as residents prepare for Deepavali, with just a day to go for the festival. The streets of popular shopping hubs like T. Nagar, Parrys, Vadapalani, Tambaram, and Anna Nagar are teeming with shoppers eager to buy new clothes, sweets, and firecrackers.
As families rush to complete their shopping, the atmosphere is charged with a festive spirit. “We are running around to find the best deals on clothes,” said one shopper in T. Nagar. “The rush is overwhelming, but it’s all part of the celebration!”
However, several sweet stalls have reported running out of stock as pre-ordered sweets have been delivered to eager customers. “We’ve had to turn away some customers because we simply don’t have enough sweets left,” a stall owner in Anna Nagar lamented. “Everyone wants to make sure they have their favorites for the festival.”
The weather has been surprisingly pleasant, adding to the joyful ambiance. “The weather God has been kind to us. It’s a bit cooler today as the sun plays hide and seek, making shopping much more enjoyable,” shared a vendor in Tambaram.
Despite the festive mood, many families are feeling the pinch as prices for clothes, crackers, and sweets have skyrocketed. “For a family of five, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to make ends meet,” said a senior member of a family shopping in T. Nagar. “We have to budget carefully this year.”
To save costs, some families are opting to buy crackers from wholesale stores in Island Grounds, where prices are comparatively lower. “We buy crackers from there because it’s a little cheaper,” explained a father who was shopping with his children.
For many, Deepavali is not just about the material preparations but also about togetherness. “For us, it’s a festival to get together with relatives, eat, and celebrate,” said a mother shopping for sweets. “Deepavali is a day to cherish. It brings everyone in our family together.”
As the sun sets on the eve of Deepavali, Chennai is alive with the spirit of celebration, reflecting the joy and unity that the festival brings to its residents.
