Veteran politician and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko has been admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai for a surgical procedure. The surgery, scheduled for Thursday, aims to remove a titanium plate that was placed in his right shoulder earlier this year.
The titanium plate was initially implanted following a minor surgery in May, which became necessary after Vaiko sustained a shoulder fracture due to a fall at his residence in Kalingapatti village, Tirunelveli district. The 80-year-old leader, known for his decades-long political career and unwavering activism, had suffered the injury while at home.
Vaiko’s injury occurred shortly before he attended the wedding of MDMK’s Kanniyakumari district secretary Vetrivel’s daughter on May 25. The surgery is expected to aid his recovery and improve his mobility as he continues his political commitments.
The news has drawn attention from supporters and well-wishers who have expressed hope for his swift and full recovery.
