With the onset of the rainy season, Chennai has seen a surge in cases of flu and other viral infections among children. Pediatricians across the city have reported a significant increase in consultations for ailments such as flu, dengue, and Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD).
Dr. Priya Ramesh, a pediatrician in T. Nagar, observed, “There has been a noticeable spike in flu cases over the past two weeks. Children are coming in with symptoms like high fever, cough, and nasal congestion. The damp weather conditions are creating a conducive environment for the spread of such infections.”
Adding to the concern are rising cases of dengue. Dr. Arvind Kumar, a public health expert, stated, “We are seeing more dengue cases this season, particularly in children. Parents must ensure mosquito control measures at home and encourage children to wear full-sleeved clothing.”
HFMD, a contagious viral infection often seen in young children, has also made a resurgence. “Kids with HFMD typically develop rashes on their hands, feet, and inside the mouth. While the condition is self-limiting, proper hygiene and isolation are crucial to prevent its spread,” explained Dr. Meena Krishnan, another pediatrician.
Parents have been advised to stay vigilant and seek medical attention at the first sign of symptoms. “Prevention is key during the rainy season. Keeping children hydrated, maintaining hygiene, and avoiding crowded places can help,” added Dr. Priya.
The Chennai Corporation has ramped up efforts to control the spread of dengue by conducting mosquito fogging drives and public awareness campaigns. Schools have also been urged to spread awareness about hygiene practices to curb the spread of infections.
Parents are urged to consult a doctor rather than self-medicate and to ensure children complete their prescribed course of treatment. As Dr. Meena concluded, “With proper care and timely medical intervention, most of these infections can be managed effectively.”
