The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is on track to complete the modernization of six bus termini in the city by March 2025. The selected termini, located in critical zones of Chennai, are Tondiarpet, Kaviarasu Kannadasan Nagar, Mullai Nagar, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Periyar Nagar, and Ambattur. These locations were chosen due to their deteriorating condition and the lack of necessary amenities, which often led to poor passenger experiences and traffic congestion. The ₹80 crore project aims to overhaul these bus termini with improved infrastructure, better facilities, and modernized amenities. The focus is particularly on North Chennai areas, which serve many underserved communities that depend on public transport for daily commuting. This project represents a major step toward enhancing public transportation in the region, improving accessibility, and contributing to the overall urban development of the city.
After finalizing contractors, work on the project has been progressing rapidly, with an emphasis on completing the modernization efforts by the stipulated deadline. The upgraded termini will feature modern shelters, waiting areas, better sanitation facilities, and enhanced safety features to ensure a comfortable experience for commuters. Additionally, the project aims to streamline the flow of buses and reduce congestion, making the daily commute smoother for the millions who rely on public transport.
In the coming years, CMDA has also planned to modernize six more bus termini in other key areas of Chennai, including T. Nagar, Avadi, Vallalar Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Padiyanallur, and Iyyappanthangal. This expansion will further the authority’s goal of creating a network of well-maintained, passenger-friendly bus terminals across the city, catering to the growing demands of the urban population.
