External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has assured that steps are being taken to rescue seven Tamil Nadu fishermen currently detained in a Pakistani jail.
In response to a letter from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin dated November 20, Jaishankar conveyed the developments in a written reply.
“We have brought to the attention of the Pakistani authorities the arrest of 14 fishermen and the seizure of their two fishing boats by the Pakistani Navy. Efforts are being made to secure consular access for the detained fishermen, but Pakistani officials have not yet granted this access,” Jaishankar stated in the letter.
The Indian High Commission in Islamabad is actively pursuing the matter to obtain consular access and ensure the safety and well-being of the fishermen until they are repatriated. The Indian government has also urged Pakistan to guarantee the safety and health of the detained individuals.
“Our High Commission in Islamabad is closely monitoring the situation and making every effort to facilitate the release and return of the fishermen to India,” the letter emphasized.
The Tamil Nadu government and the families of the detained fishermen have been pressing for swift action to bring their loved ones back home. The Ministry of External Affairs, in collaboration with Indian diplomatic representatives in Pakistan, is working to resolve the issue and ensure their safe return.
