DMK govt shielding liquor traders: Annamalai

Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai has alleged that the DMK government, which should serve as a shield for the people, is instead protecting liquor traders.
On January 3, BJP Mahila Morcha members from Dindigul district were detained by the police and held in a wedding hall while on their way to participate in a justice rally in Madurai. Following this, BJP’s Dindigul West District Secretary, Palani Kanagaraj, visited a nearby private liquor shop with his supporters, accusing it of selling alcohol illegally. He also released a video criticizing the police for their inaction.
In connection with this incident, the Palani Town Police registered a case against Kanagaraj under five sections, including trespassing into the liquor shop and assaulting its staff. Kanagaraj was arrested by the police at a checkpoint on the Palani-Kodaikanal road.
Condemning the arrest, Annamalai issued a statement saying, “The BJP’s Dindigul West District Secretary, Kanagaraj, exposed the illegal sale of alcohol at a private liquor shop, which was opened as early as 8 a.m. He did so in front of the media. Instead of taking action against the illegal sale, the police filed cases under five sections and hastily arrested him. This arrest is highly condemnable.
The DMK government, which is supposed to protect the people, is instead acting as a shield for liquor traders. The Tamil Nadu police should stop functioning as a wing of the DMK and fulfill their responsibilities impartially. Kanagaraj must be released immediately,” Annamalai’s statement concluded.
