In a significant move as part of the reorganization of local bodies by the Tamil Nadu government, the Vanagaram and Adayalampattu village panchayats are likely to be included under the jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). If the proposal goes through, the area covered by the GCC would expand from 426 square kilometers to 446 square kilometers, bringing the total population under its administration to 6,704,456. This reorganization, as per an order issued by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) department on December 31, is expected to improve the quality of life in the two village panchayats, which are now set to become part of the city.
However, there are some concerns about the proposal. A member of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) in Neelankarai, Chennai, has expressed doubts regarding the expansion. Neelankarai itself was incorporated into the GCC in 2011, and the resident believes that GCC is already facing challenges in managing the areas currently under its control. The resident pointed out that it could take over a decade for full development to be realized in these newly proposed areas.
The Tamil Nadu government is seeking public opinion on the reorganization. People have been given six weeks to submit their objections and suggestions. The deadline for submitting feedback is approaching, and residents are encouraged to send their opinions to the Principal Secretary of the MAWS department at Fort St. George, Chennai.
