In response to the recent sexual assault case involving a second-year female student, Anna University has issued new regulations to enhance campus safety and control access. The university registrar released a circular on Sunday detailing the rules. The circular mandates that students can only use bicycles on campus, with cars and two-wheelers restricted to designated parking areas. Delivery agents are barred from entering beyond the university gate, and construction workers must vacate the campus premises after working hours.
In addition, the circular emphasized swift action against complaints of sexual harassment, underscoring the university’s commitment to ensuring student safety.
These measures follow the shocking incident on December 23, where a student was sexually assaulted within the Guindy campus. The National Commission for Women (NCW) had suggested access control in colleges as a preventive measure, which the university has begun implementing.
Meanwhile, the special investigation team (SIT) comprising three women IPS officers has been actively probing the case. The team visited the campus on Thursday, conducted inquiries with officials, staff, and students, and inspected the crime scene to gather evidence.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with opposition parties continuing to question the university’s safety measures. These new rules are seen as a step toward addressing these concerns and restoring confidence in campus security.
