The Central Government has formed a new 7-member supervisory committee to oversee the safety of the Mullaperiyar Dam.
During a hearing on January 8, a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Dipankar Datta questioned why a national-level expert committee had not been formed for the Mullaperiyar issue.
In response, the Central Government has now constituted this new supervisory committee under the National Dam Safety Act. The committee will be chaired by Anil Jain, Chairman of the National Dam Safety Authority. Members include Manivasan, Additional Chief Secretary (Water Resources), Tamil Nadu; Subramani, Chairman of the Cauvery Technical Committee; and Vishwas, Additional Chief Secretary, Kerala, along with other chief engineers and officials.
The Central Government has clarified that this new committee will replace the existing oversight panel.
