A total of 47 candidates are contesting in the Erode East constituency by-election, scheduled for February 5. The by-election was necessitated following the demise of sitting MLA E.V.K.S. Elangovan. The counting of votes will take place on February 8, with results announced the same day.The main opposition AIADMK, along with BJP and DMDK, have opted to boycott the election. Key contenders include DMK’s V.C. Chandrakumar and Naam Tamilar Katchi’s Seethalakshmi.
Following the withdrawal deadline, which ended today (January 20) at 3 PM, eight independent candidates withdrew their nominations, leaving 47 candidates in the race.
