The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has announced the expansion of bus services from the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus in Kilambakkam, starting Tuesday, March 4. This move aims to ease traffic congestion in Tambaram and enhance connectivity for commuters.
Following recommendations from the Tambaram City Traffic Police, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has decided to terminate long-distance buses at Kilambakkam instead of Tambaram. This change particularly affects buses operating via Chengalpattu and Tindivanam, which will now conclude their routes at Chennai’s integrated transport hub.
To accommodate the increased commuter demand, MTC currently runs 589 buses on 80 routes, making 3,795 trips daily. With the latest expansion, an additional 104 buses will be introduced, adding 816 more trips across Chennai.
The new arrangement is expected to improve traffic flow in Tambaram while making Kilambakkam a key transit point for long-distance travelers arriving from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
