The Southern Railway has set a target to complete the Kilambakkam halt station by May 2025, according to Chennai Divisional Railway Manager B. Vishwanath Eerya. He confirmed that 50% of the construction work has been completed, with platform earthwork and gravel filling already finished. The installation of platform shelters and overhead electric lines is also progressing at a rapid pace.The station was initially scheduled for completion in February 2025, but the project faced delays due to a State government request for an additional rainwater drainage culvert. The station is strategically located between Vandalur and Urappakkam, making it a key transportation hub as south-bound bus services shift to the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus.
The Tamil Nadu government has allocated ā¹20 crore for the halt station, while a ā¹79 crore skywalk connecting the station to the Kilambakkam bus terminus remains in its early planning stages. This infrastructure aims to enhance commuter accessibility and streamline transit between rail and bus services.
To further support commuter movement, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has announced plans to introduce over 100 additional buses to Kilambakkam. This will add to the existing 600 buses that currently make 3,800 daily trips across 80 routes.
With these developments, the Kilambakkam halt station is expected to become a major transit point for passengers traveling to and from southern Tamil Nadu, reducing congestion at Chennai’s central transport hubs.
