Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Wednesday said using Periyar’s [social reformer E.V. Ramasamy] name even to cover up criticisms against the Union government shows why he is admired in Tamil Nadu and relevant even today.
Referring to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech in Parliament on Tuesday, Vijay, in a post on X, questioned: “Is the Finance Minister really upset about Periyar calling Tamil a barbaric language? If so, why can’t the imposition of the three-language policy on Tamil Nadu be stopped?”
According to him, Periyar is admired in Tamil Nadu for several reasons, including his contributions to supporting widow remarriage and opposing child marriage and caste-based oppressions, he said.
