In a dramatic turn of events, the Greater Chennai Police opened fire and killed one of the suspects involved in a chain-snatching spree that targeted elderly women across the city on Tuesday. The deceased, identified as Jaffer Irani, was a key member of the notorious Irani gang, which has been linked to a series of robberies nationwide.
The police acted swiftly in tracking down the suspects, Amjad and Jaffer Irani, arresting them at the Chennai Airport just before they could flee. One of the accused had already boarded a flight but was detained moments before takeoff.
Investigations revealed that the duo had snatched gold chains from at least six elderly women within hours, sending shockwaves through the city. Their quick escape attempt indicated a well-planned operation, but law enforcement officers managed to outmaneuver them.
Following their arrest, the suspects were taken to a location in Taramani where they had reportedly stashed the stolen jewelry. It was during this visit that Jaffer allegedly attacked a policeman and attempted to escape. In response, the police opened fire, fatally shooting him.
Officials stated that the action was necessary as Jaffer posed an imminent threat and was trying to evade custody. His accomplice, Amjad, remains in police custody, and further investigations are underway to uncover the extent of their criminal network.
The Irani gang, to which the suspects belonged, is infamous for its chain-snatching operations across the country. They are known for their swift execution of crimes and ability to evade law enforcement by frequently changing locations.
With one suspect dead and another in custody, the police are now focused on dismantling the network and recovering stolen valuables. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as they continue their crackdown on organized crime.
