The initiative, inspired by similar efforts in Dubai, seeks to create safe, comfortable, and well-equipped spaces for food and e-commerce delivery workers, with a special focus on enhancing the safety and convenience for women workers.
Addressing the Needs of Gig Workers
As the gig economy continues to expand in cities like Chennai, workers often face long hours under challenging conditions, including exposure to the sweltering heat, lack of proper sanitation, and safety concerns. The air-conditioned rest areas are designed to address many of these issues, providing a much-needed respite for delivery personnel throughout the day.
âThe goal is to create dedicated spaces where gig workers can take breaks, charge their phones, store their belongings safely, and most importantly, rest in a comfortable and secure environment,â said a senior official from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), speaking about the project.
The proposed rest areas will be strategically placed in high-traffic neighborhoods such as Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Royapettah, Mylapore, and T Nagar. Each area will be designed with the specific needs of gig workers in mind, featuring facilities such as clean toilets, seating areas, and designated parking spaces.
A Safe Haven for Women Workers
One of the standout features of this initiative is its focus on enhancing safety for women workers. Despite the increasing presence of women in the gig economy, they still account for only about 10 percent of the workforce. By providing secure, air-conditioned spaces with hygiene facilities, the rest areas are expected to encourage more women to join the delivery workforce.
âFor women, these rest areas will be a safe space to take a break and use clean facilities, which will be vital in ensuring their safety and comfort,â added the official. The spaces will also address concerns about theft, a common complaint among workers, by providing secure storage options for their belongings.

The introduction of air-conditioned rest areas is expected to play a key role in improving road safety.
