Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will file a case in the Supreme Court against the controversial Waqf Act amendment, which was recently passed in the Lok Sabha. Addressing the State Assembly under Rule 110, he strongly condemned the passage of the bill and vowed to fight it legally.
CM Stalin pointed out that while the amendment was passed with 288 votes in favor, it faced significant opposition, with 232 MPs voting against it. He emphasized that such a high number of opposing votes was not insignificant and reflected widespread discontent across political parties.
“The passage of this bill at 2 AM, disregarding the objections raised by the majority of political parties, is nothing short of an attack on India’s constitutional framework and an assault on religious harmony,” Stalin stated.
In a symbolic protest against the bill, DMK and its alliance partners’ MLAs entered the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly wearing black badges. Stalin asserted that the bill should not just be opposed but should be completely repealed, reinforcing his party’s commitment to the fight against it.
Declaring that Tamil Nadu would stand firm in its opposition, CM Stalin announced that the DMK will challenge the Waqf Act amendment in the Supreme Court. He expressed confidence that the state’s legal challenge would ultimately succeed in overturning what he described as an unconstitutional law.
“Tamil Nadu will fight and Tamil Nadu will win,” he declared, reaffirming the state’s resistance to what he views as an unjust legislative move.
