Tahawwur Rana, accused of aiding the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, landed in Delhi around 6.30 pm on Thursday aboard a special flight from the United States. The National Investigation Agency formally arrested Rana immediately after his arrival. Rana’s extradition marks a major diplomatic and legal win for India in the pursuit of justice for the 26/11 attacks that killed 166 people.
Soon after his arrival at Palam Technical Airport, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) confirmed his extradition and arrest. “The NIA investigation team at the airport arrested Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin living primarily in Chicago (US), soon after he emerged from the airplane, after completing all the necessary legal formalities,” a statement by the probe agency said.
Bulletproof convoys and armed commandos were stationed at the airport.
