Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid heartfelt tribute to late DMDK founder and Tamil film icon ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth, lauding him as a remarkable individual remembered by generations for his contributions to society. Modi’s message came in response to DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth’s emotional statement on the deep bond her husband shared with the Prime Minister.Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote, “My dear friend Captain Vijayakant was remarkable. He and I interacted so closely over the years and also worked together. People across generations remember him for the good he did for society.” The Prime Minister tagged a video posted by Premalatha in which she shared memories of the unique bond between the two leaders.
In the video, Premalatha described how Modi had always regarded Vijayakanth as more than a political ally. “Narendra Modiji always saw him as more than a political colleague. He would fondly call him the ‘Lion of Tamil Nadu’ and check on him like an elder brother during his illness. Their bond was built on true affection and mutual respect – it was a friendship that went beyond politics,” she said.
Premalatha also recalled how the Prime Minister regularly enquired about Vijayakanth’s health during his long illness and never missed wishing him on his birthday. “He was like an elder brother to me and a true friend to my husband,” she added.
Vijayakanth, who made a mark as a superstar in Tamil cinema before launching the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), was known for his charismatic leadership and philanthropic activities. His sudden demise in December 2023 left a void in both the film and political landscapes of Tamil Nadu.
The mutual admiration between Modi and Vijayakanth had often been publicly acknowledged, with several instances of camaraderie shared over the years. Modi’s tribute reflects not only a political alliance but a personal bond that transcended party lines.
