Reconsider cut in private Haj quota: CM to Centre

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin on Monday strongly objected to the reported reduction in India’s private Haj quota, urging the Union Ministry of External Affairs to intervene and address the concerns of thousands of affected pilgrims.
In a post on social media platform X, Stalin stated, “The sudden cut in India’s private Haj quota has caused distress to thousands of pilgrims.” He emphasized that many had already made plans and preparations, and such an unexpected change has created significant uncertainty and disappointment.
Stalin called upon External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to take immediate steps to resolve the issue. “I urge the Hon’ble External Affairs Minister to take appropriate steps to alleviate their concerns,” he said in the message.
The reduction in the private Haj quota reportedly comes at a time when demand from Indian Muslims to undertake the sacred pilgrimage remains high. The private quota system is often preferred by pilgrims seeking flexibility in travel arrangements, and any sudden changes can severely impact their journey and finances.
The Chief Minister’s intervention is in line with Tamil Nadu’s tradition of ensuring equal opportunity for all communities and safeguarding the rights of its citizens, especially in matters of religious and cultural significance.
With the Haj pilgrimage scheduled to take place in June, Stalin’s appeal to the Centre reflects the urgency of the matter, as pilgrims across the country await clarity on their travel arrangements.
