A professor from the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University was arrested on Sunday for allegedly impregnating a student and attempting to medically terminate the pregnancy at a private hospital in Padur. The incident came to light after the student, a second-year college girl, developed severe complications during the abortion procedure. The accused, Rajesh Kumar (45) from Namakkal, holds a PhD and has been working as an Assistant Professor at the university in Melakottaiyur on Kelambakkam–Vandalur Road since 2017. According to the police, Rajesh Kumar recently got married and moved into a rented house near the university. Despite his marriage, he was reportedly involved in a relationship with the student, who was staying in the college hostel.
The issue surfaced when the student was found to be two months pregnant. Rajesh allegedly took her to a private hospital in Padur to undergo a medical termination of pregnancy. However, the procedure went wrong, leading to excessive bleeding and a critical health condition for the student.
Hospital authorities, suspecting foul play, immediately alerted the Thalambur police. Police rushed to the scene and shifted the girl to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for further treatment.
During initial questioning, Rajesh Kumar gave inconsistent statements. A detailed investigation revealed that he was responsible for the pregnancy. He was subsequently arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
Authorities have also launched an investigation into the private hospital for performing the abortion, which may have violated legal and ethical protocols. Health department officials are working alongside police to examine the hospital’s role and adherence to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) guidelines.
The case has shocked the university community, raising serious concerns over student safety and faculty conduct.
